After 91 years of family ownership, the Flying M Ranch in Oregon is still running strong, operated by yet another generation of hardworking people. Bryce and Barbara Mitchell, grandpa and grandma to the family, (Bryce was born on the property) still work on the ranch, which offers an airstrip, a bed and breakfast facility, a campground, special events and a 30-horse stable for trail riding and overnight camping.
Barbara runs the bed and breakfast business, a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom house and cooks up a hearty Sunday morning breakfast featuring her famous sticky buns as well as meat, egg, fruit and pancake offerings. The cost? Just $10 with advance reservations. Wouldn’t want to run out of those delicious sticky buns!
Granddaughter Jessica Reber is in charge of the horse program, maintaining 30 horses for guided trail riding, overnight excursions and special events such as the steak fry dinner on Saturday nights. The maximum number of riders at any one time is 18. If you have your own horses, you can use the private property and 80 acres of trails on Trask Mountain for $5 a day plus $3 for each horse. Guided trail rides are $30 per hour or an all-day trip for $110.
The horse program, started in 1971 by Bryce and Barbara, is Girl Scout safety approved and will take riders as young as 6 years. The steak fry offers horse or covered wagon rides to the dining area and the entire atmosphere is totally family friendly for your enjoyment and comfort.
The campground has open areas for RVs or campers or tents although there are no hook-ups. Three camp shacks with beds and wood stoves are available for $25-30 per night. Bring your own amenities to give your stay those homey comforts. Tent and RV camping is available for $15 per night plus $5 for each extra vehicle.
Flying M Ranch is a great place for events as well. Weddings, meetings and reunion gatherings are among the many types of uses that occur here.
