Barb Leech, of Albany, Oregon, bought a horse for her daughter 13 years ago. Knowing nothing of horses, she poured herself into securing any and every lesson for her daughter. As she watched her daughter’s riding skills develop, she began to wonder what it would be like to ride for herself.
At 40-something years of age, Barb said she began to take “tons of lessons” and started to develop that thrilling fascination of partnership between horse and rider. She focuses mainly on trail riding in the Albany-Corvallis area of Oregon, but continues to enjoy watching her daughter participate in endurance riding events as well as attending local venues for polo, gaming, eventing and roping shows.
Her business, Equine Exchange, germinated with two partners who had bundles of 4-H level clothing and tack and nowhere to put it. They conceived the idea of a year-round tack liquidation project to off-load their accumulation of clothing and gear and make it available to up-and-coming riders. Eventually the business partnership settled into Barb and her husband and was moved to the Flinn Block building in downtown Albany, Oregon.
Barb offers new and used horse and rider gear. She takes consignment saddles and saddle seats, show clothing for English, Western, Endurance and Aussie riding as well as casual Western clothing and accessories such as hats, purses, belts, etc. Additionally, she offers new, mid-priced housewares and giftware, artist’s prints and originals, all with a horse theme, of course.
Her used offerings are all based on a consignment contract with saddles going 20% and all other holdings 35% to Barb. The remaining money is paid to the consignee. She is always in the market for additional consignment items in good, usable condition. Give Barb a call at her shop at 541-757-7669 (PONY) or take a look at her web site for more information. Recycle your used tack and clothing and give it a new life with another horse and rider. Equine Exchange is the place to visit for money saving shopping.
