Horse Camping in Oregon

Horse Camping in Oregon My mini vacation from selling equestrian real estate last week was horse camping for 5 days in the foothills of the Cascades in Oregon.

My four year old Friesian is green.  She did go camping last summer with the trainer during her 90 days of training.

Sorry, photo is blurry!

Second Day on the Trail

This summer, it was time for me to take her on the trail!  We camped for 5 days at Santiam Horse Camp, just a couple of miles outside of Gates, Oregon.  The camp is just a few years old.  All the sites have 4 stall corrals-and thanks to the input of OET, the stalls were constructed with a high cross pole in the middle and slighly lower cross poles on the outside, allowing you to tie tarps during the rainy season.  Note-there is no potable water, the hand pumped water is for livestock only.  No reservations, but sites are only $10 per night and $2 per night for an extra vehicle.  I like the fact that each site is shady, they left most of the trees in place.  This keeps you and your horse cool in the shade during the summer.  Elevation is around 1400 at the site, with the trails topping out somewhere around 2,200.  This is a great camp site or haul in for the day to condition your horse for higher elevations.
